Dear
All:
No
one has to remind you that hurricane season is here! I personally hope
that everyone who is reading this has taken steps to ensure their safety
this hurricane season. Members of the Steering Committee have been meeting
with leaders of the community to ensure that we are on board with their
plans. Because the primary mission of the steering committee, in my
view, is to ensure the safety of the staff and groups meeting at Anchor’s
Aweigh.
To
that end, the board has come to the decision that for the sake of safety,
the clubhouse will be closed when a hurricane strikes. The exact details
as to when we actually close and then reopen the doors are still being
worked out. However, this bears repeating, the clubhouse will be closed
when a hurricane strikes. Regardless of the category.
Why
are we doing this? Our clubhouse has been held together by duct tape
and chewing gum for a long time. The Steering Committee has been soliciting
bids to have work done on the spalling. Contractors who have bid on
this work, indicated that the problem needs to be addressed soon and
that the structure is safe now, but the wind loads of a hurricane could
put our building in danger. The cost for this work is much higher than
any of us imagined and we are in the process of putting together a major
fundraising effort to have this work done next year.
I
pray that we will not have to close the clubhouse this season, but I
know it is something that has to be done.
Take
care,
